How to Survive Your First Year in College
Your first year in college can be the most exciting part of your student life. But, it’s also the time when you will experience all kinds of fears. What if nobody wants to be your friend? What if you will run out of available slots? Will you be able to pass all your subjects this semester? You can list 99 questions on your first day and leave one question for the entire school year – how are you going to survive freshman year?
We have experienced and felt the same. Yes, we’ve been there and we had cold feet. But let me tell you one thing – what you are feeling right now is completely normal. There’s nothing wrong with you. But, it would be beneficial to learn practical tips that can help you survive your first year in college.
1. Attend all orientations. All students are encouraged to participate in the orientation. This is to help familiarise yourself with the campus’ policies, activities, faculty, financial aid, and the like. During an orientation, you will be able to see other freshmen. Some of them may be your classmates or roommates. Also, student kits, such as handbook, are also given.
2. Find a good spot to study. If you are living in the dormitory inside the campus, you may want to ask your roommates about the ideal places to study in school. Or if you don’t mind the crowd, it is always best to study in the library to avoid distractions.
3. Go to class. This is a no-brainer. There will be times, however, that you won’t feel attending a particular class because you’re too tired from doing other class projects or you feel sick. Or just because you don’t like to see your professor. As much as possible, avoid the temptation of skipping or missing classes. Remember that you’re in college to learn.
4. Be friendly. This may sound cliché, but no man is an island. You’ll definitely need a lending hand, especially when you have to work in groups. Befriend your classmates and establish a good relationship with them. You might just find true friends in college.
5. Get involved. While your academic ranking or status is important, it won’t be harmful to consider joining a student organisation, club, or sports team. By doing this, you will be more connected to your school and exposed to the reality of college life. In addition, you will be able to meet seniors who can help you survive and conquer your first year in college.
Surviving your first year in college is just the first step. And it won’t be easy on the second, third, and fourth year. But remember college life should be fun. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just keep on studying and learn what you need for your future.
